Program Philosophy
Ohio Northern has a commitment to providing high quality artistic experiences for students and opens auditions to ONU students and area dancers. The program offers a dance minor and working with two dance companies per year in choreographic projects provides a wide range of dance experiences for students. Artists are commissioned to set choreography on a company of dancers decided upon by open auditions. Sometimes the work is danced solely by ONU dancers; sometimes it is an integrated experience with students and professionals dancing side by side. As often as possible when an artist is in residence, master classes are offered. The dance minor is a “freestanding” minor, open to any major in the university. Classes are offered in Modern, Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Dance Styles for Musical Theatre, Dance History, Dance Composition and Dance and Culture. The dance program has a strong musical theatre component.
